Phemes

2018- Public installation

Phemes is a series of public installations composed of abstract imagery extracted from advertisements across New York City. The source materials are decomposed and stripped of their original narratives, leaving fragments that reveal underlying social and political issues.

The title derives from the Greek goddess and divine personification of fame, renown, report, and gossip in Greek mythology.

By extracting imagery from advertisements (one of the most pervasive forms of public communication) the work appropriates a circulating visual vocabulary and reconstructs it. The final images carry contemporary visual rumors: fragmented, suggestive, and continuously reconstructed through public interpretation.
